By Specimen or Application/Asbestos

Two observation methods are typically used for viewing asbestos under a microscope. Polarized-light microscopes (PLM) are used to identify asbestos in materials by using cross-polarization with a rotating stage. This method is the best way to positively identify the presence and location of asbestos in samples. Phase-contrast microscopes (PCM) are used to count asbestos fibers which have already been identified. This method uses contrast-enhancement to increase detail in samples in order to help estimate the concentration of asbestos.
