Specialized Microscopes/Darkfield Microscopes

Darkfield microscopes are useful for viewing low-contrast, unstained subjects. These microscopes use specialized condensers to create a hollow cone of light rather than the uniform light seen with brightfield condensers. This hollow cone of light enhances contrast between dissimilar substances resulting in a dark background with illuminated subjects. Common applications include live blood analysis since this technique does not involve staining.
