The acid-fast staining technique is used to differentiate acid-fast and non-acid-fast bacteria. Carbol fuchsin is used as the primary stain. HCl acts as a decolorizing agent which leaves non-acid-fast cells colorless while acid-fast cells retain the staining color. Methylene blue as then used as a counterstain to add its blue color to the non-acid-fast cells.
